On Monday, the L.A. Dodgers thought they upgraded their bullpen. They agreed to trade two prospects who were to be named later to Cincinnati for Aroldis Chapman. The deal was awaiting Chapman’s passing a medical examination.
The trade was not completed on Monday because of an alleged domestic violence incident involving Chapman. According to ESPN, the 27-year old pitcher choked and pushed his girlfriend during a verbal argument over something the girlfriend found on his cell phone she didn’t like. Allegedly, he also fired his handgun in the house. Seven of the bullets landed in the concrete wall while one hit the window. This occurred on October 30th in Davie, Florida. No arrests were made during the investigation because of the conflicting stories. ESPN stated that Joe Torre, MLB’s Chief Baseball officer said, “We’re in the process of getting all information necessary.”
According to MLB.com, Red’s President Walt Jocketty said, “MLB has taken over full responsibility and will look into it. Everything public will happen through them. It’s an open investigation. It’s MLB policy when something like this happens, whatever kind of police investigation.”
If any of this is true, Chapman shouldn’t be traded but face the consequences. This type of behavior is unacceptable. He should be suspended by Major League Baseball and required to take anger management classes. If MLB doesn’t suspend him hopefully either the Reds or the Dodgers will because he needs to learn the consequences of his actions.
It’s really too bad Chapman had to make such poor choices. The Dodgers were about to receive bullpen help that they desperately needed. The trade still might go through after MLB investigates. Either way, Chapman’s character is now in a bad light.
