Boston Celtics May Possibly Trade Kyrie Irving This summer

The Boston Celtics will look to improve their team this summer. One possibility is to trade point guard Kyrie Irving.   Irving has two years left on his current contract until he hits free agency.

A deal for him isn’t out of the question. According to NESN.com, Celtics play-by-play man Mike Gorman said, “Certainly if you’re going to trade Kyrie, you get excited about there’s a whole lot coming back. Danny doesn’t like to put the ‘untouchable’ label on anybody. I do think (Jayson) Tatum is untouchable myself. I think it would take some unbelievable offer to get him away from Boston right now. But I think everybody else is probably in play to some degree.” Gorman admitted that the Celtics are probably not going to let Irving go.

Irving was in his first full season with the Celtics. He played 60 games before knee surgery on his left knee ended his year. It was a short first season in Boston for Irving but productive averaging 24.4 points per game. He set plays up for Boston and fed his teammates for easy looks at the basket with 5.1 assists per game.

The Celtics managed to finish off with the 2nd best record in the Eastern Conference at 55-27. They even managed to go all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They lost game 7 and the series 87-79. One has to wonder if Irving might have been the difference in the series if he was healthy.

The Celtics shouldn’t deal Irving. He is important to this basketball team on offense. The Celtics saw a glimpse of that in the regular season before he went down. They saw what life was like without him, falling short of playing in the NBA Finals.

The other difficulty with trading him is his contract. He has two years and will be paid $20 million each season, a lot of money to take on for another team.

Irving could be the difference between the Celtics playing in the NBA Finals and sitting home watching it. They must keep him. Hopefully Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge sees that and makes another move to improve the team that doesn’t involve Irving.
