The Colorado Rockies will not have the services of top prospect Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers was placed on the injured list on June 25th. Colorado was hoping to have him back at some point this year. Unfortunately, he underwent surgery to repair a labral tear of his right shoulder ending his season.
Rodgers was called up from the Albuquerque Isotopes on May 17th. In 37 games in Albuquerque he was swinging a hot bat with a .350 batting average with 9 home runs and 21 RBI’s. He was able to hit the ball in the gap for extra base hits with 1 triple and 10 doubles.
Albuquerque placed Rodgers at 3rd base, 2nd base, and shortstop. The top position for him was at 2nd base where he appeared in 27 games. Rodgers was involved with 18 double plays and had 70 infield assists. The downside was his errors with 4 at 2nd base.
Colorado knew they wanted to see what they had in Rodgers. He struggled at times in defense in his time with the Rockies. He appeared in 16 games at 2nd base and 9 at short stop. When Rodgers was placed at 2nd base he made 3 errors and at shortstop it was 2, a total of 5 errors, far too many. It seemed like the game was going to fast for him. Rodgers wasn’t setting his feet to throw the baseball and those errors cost the Rockies because a base runner was now on base or in scoring position.
On offense he didn’t smack the ball like he did in Albuquerque. In 76 plate appearances, he hit .224 with 7 RBI’s. He managed 2 extra base hits and those were doubles.
Rodgers’ season is now over. He had a taste of what it is like to be in the “big leagues”. He must heal up after surgery and wait until next season to make an impact. It could be that if Rodgers plays well in Spring Training in 2020, that will be more than enough for him to start the year with the Colorado Rockies. Otherwise he will be back in Triple A with Albuquerque and might be called up yet again. ffff
