Chicago Bears Hire Matt Nagy As Their Next Head Coach

By Jordan Long

The Chicago Bears have their new head coach. The job had been open since Chicago fired John Fox on January 1st after a disappointing 5-11 season. Fox was with the Bears for the last 3 years. They were 14-34 under him with an unimpressive winning percentage of .292. Matt Nagy will now take over.

Nagy has never been an NFL head coach before. He has plenty of experience in the NFL. Nagy coached under Andy Reid since 2008 when he was in Philadelphia and Reid brought him over to Kansas City for the last 5 seasons. This past year was his first as an offensive coordinator. Under him the Chiefs’ offense was tough to beat. They scored 25.9 points per game which ranked 6th in the NFL. They were able to move the football with 375.4 total yards per game. The Chiefs passed and ran the football with 256.5 passing yards and 118.9 rushing yards per game. His offense was the reason the Chiefs were able to win the AFC West with a 10-6 record.

In the playoff loss against the Titans, his offense had a total of 325 yards. The problem was they couldn’t score in the second half. Nagy was unable to adjust his game plan. The Titans shutout the Chiefs in the second half which ultimately cost the Chiefs the football game.

The Bears like what Nagy brings to the table. His offensive mindset will help the Bears next season. The Bears need to be patient with him. They gave John Fox 3 years and must do the same with him. It will take the Bears a season or 2 to understand the offensive system Nagy runs.

The only way this deal works is if the Bears improve each season. Nagy may not win a Super Bowl in the first few years. They have to at least make a run to the playoffs even if it is a Wild Card. This would show development under Nagy. Time will only tell but this seems like the right hire.
