The Chicago Bears are scheduled to start training camp tommorow. They made a trade with the Miami Dolphins. Chicago sent tight end Adam Shaheen to Miami for a 7th round draft pick in the 2021 Draft.
Shaheen was a 2nd round pick for the Bears in 2017. That is a high draft selection for the Bears. They expected him to be a starter. Unfortunately, his play never developed in the NFL. In his 3 years in the NFL, he caught 26 passes for 249 yards and 4 touchdowns in 27 games. Those numbers aren’t what the Bears expected.
Shaheen may not have made the Bears’ roster this season. They have 7 tight ends including starter Jimmy Graham. Shaheen might have been the odd man out. The move saves the Bears $1.3 million in cap space this year. The Bears received something back for him, even if it is a low draft pick that they may not use in 2021.
Sending him to Miami gives Shaheen a fresh start. The Dolphins are looking for a backup tight end behind Mike Gesicki. He is going to compete with Durham Smythe and Michael Roberts for the #2 tight end position.
The Dolphins feel this is a low-risk, high-reward move. A 7th-round pick is not a lot to give for a guy competing for a roster spot. Since there aren’t preseason games to show what Shaheen can do, he must make an impact at training camp. He has to show the ability to catch the football and gain yards as well as block for the running backs too. If he can do that, the Dolphins’ coaching staff might need to keep him around. If not, the Dolphins will cut him. This could be Shaheen’s last chance to make an NFL roster. He must make the most of it.
