Colorado Rockies Looking To Keep Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez

By Jordan Long

The Colorado Rockies are talking to outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. He is in the last year of a seven-year, $80.5 million contract he signed in 2011. The Rockies would like to keep Gonzalez in a Rockies’ uniform.

Gonzalez is one of the Rockies’ best hitters. Last season he hit .298 with 25 home runs and 100 RBI’s. In his career he has hit .291 with 201 home runs and 654 RBI’s. Gonzalez is valuable to the Rockies’ offense. He can hit the long ball to score runs or gets on base to drive in his teammates. The only downside with Gonzalez is that he chases pitches out of the zone, which causes strikeouts. He struck out a total of 129 times last season.

The Rockies want to keep him because of his fielding. Gonzalez rarely drops the ball in right field. He made 3 errors all of last year. Gonzalez has one of the strongest arms in the majors. If there are runners on base and they try to advance, he will throw them out. Gonzalez had 8 outfield assists last year.

The Colorado Rockies must do everything they can to keep Gonzalez in Colorado. He has all the attributes that a team looks for in an outfielder.

If Colorado is unable to sign him to a contract extension before the start of the season, they might trade him at the trade deadline. That way they will get something back for him rather then letting Gonzalez go for nothing. If that occurs, Colorado is still in great shape in the outfield. On the roster they have Gerardo Parra, David Dahl, Raimel Tapia, and Jordan Patterson. Parra is the only outfielder who has plenty of playing experience in Colorado. The others would need more time to become a decent outfielder. Hopefully the Colorado Rockies and Carlos Gonzalez get a contract done to keep him in Colorado for the rest of his career.
