The NFL offseason is officially here for all 32 teams since the Super Bowl is now over. NFL free agency starts March 17th, 2021. Plenty of trades could happen before then. The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly taking calls on quarterback Russell Wilson but it is highly unlikely they will deal the quarterback.
Wilson has been with the Seattle Seahawks ever since they drafted him in 2012. He has a record of 98-45-1 as the starter. In those games, he passed for 33,946 yards, 267 touchdowns, with an impressively low 81 interceptions.
Wilson is also one of the best running quarterbacks in the game. He uses his legs to buy more time to throw or he will take off to gain yards. Wilson has run for 4,506 yards and 21 touchdowns. His average yards is an impressive 5.6 yards.
The Seattle Seahawks advanced to the playoffs 8 times and played in Super Bowl 48 and 49. Seattle won Super Bowl 48 with him. The Seahawks looking to trade Wilson makes little sense. He is the leader of their football team. If not for him, the Seahawks may not have turned their franchise around. Wilson is one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the game right now.
The Seahawks can listen, but they don’t have to make a move. It may cost a few first round picks and maybe a couple of 2nd or 3rd draft picks. Unless the price is too good to pass up, he will still be in a Seattle Seahawks uniform.
The only reason to let him go is cap space. Wilson is under contract for this year with a cap hit of $32 million. There is a potential out after this year. After that Wilson has two years left with a cap hit of $37 million in 2022 and $39 million in 2023, a lot for any team to take on.
The Seahawks should just keep Wilson. The worst case is they talk to him to make the cap hit lower. It would be odd for them at this time to give up their franchise quarterback, but stranger things have happened in the NFL during the offseason.
