The Dallas Cowboys ended the 2019 season at 8-8, second in the NFC East Division. They missed the playoffs by 1 game. Head Coach Jason Garrett was on the hotseat all year. Rumors were swirling that Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones was going to let Garrett go. Jones met with Garrett and decided what was best for the franchise was to move on from Garrett. His contract is set to expire on January 14th.
Garrett took over as the Cowboys Head Coach on November 8th, 2010. The Cowboys were 1-7 at the time and let go of Head Coach Wade Phillips. Phillips spent 4 seasons with the Cowboys with a record of 34-22, a winning percentage of .607. Garrett led Dallas to a 5-3 mark to finish the year. That was enough for Jones to keep him as Head Coach.
Garrett coached Dallas for 9 more seasons. He helped the Cowboys win the NFC East Division 3 times which equaled the same number of playoff appearances under him. Dallas ended up with a bye in the Wild Card round and played in the Divisional Round. Dallas never won a playoff game under Garrett.
This season, Garrett knew his job was in jeopardy. He had to not only win the AFC East Division but make a deep run to the playoffs and even to the Super Bowl. Anything less than that was going to be a failure and possibly end his time in Dallas. The Cowboys didn’t make the postseason and Garrett let go.
The Cowboys needed a fresh start. Garrett showed in his time in Dallas he couldn’t turn the franchise into Super Bowl winner. Letting his agreement expire is the way to have it happen. The Cowboys will begin a search for their next Head Coach.
For Garrett, he could be in demand for other NFL openings which include Cleveland and Carolina because he has head coaching experience. If not, he can also be hired as an offensive coordinator for a team to help improve an offense with the goal of improving a franchise.
