Decision Looming For Paul Pierce

L.A. Clippers small forward Paul Pierce has a big decision coming. He will decide if he wants to keep playing in the NBA or retire. What should Paul Pierce do?

Pierce has played 18 years in the NBA with four different teams, the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and L.A. Clippers. Last season was a rough one for Paul Pierce. It was his first season with the L.A. Clippers. He had a career low of 6.1 points per game coming off the bench. Pierce was backing up Jeff Green. Pierce assisted the Clippers in reaching the playoffs, even though they lost to the Portland Trailblazers in the first round in six games.

Pierce might want to retire because he is not the same player he was in Boston.   He can still make baskets and play defense but he is not a starter. Pierce has nothing to prove in the game of basketball. His accomplishments tell it all. He won an NBA championship with Boston in 2008 and was the MVP of that series. Pierce was selected to the All-Star team 10 times. He also won the NBA Three-Point Shootout in 2010. Pierce was voted on the All-NBA Third Team three times and the All-NBA Second Team once.

Pierce might not walk away because of his contract and the team is talented. He has one year remaining on his contract, which is worth $3.5 million. The Clippers are a decent team. They have super stars in Blake Griffin, J.J.Redick, Chris Paul, and DeAndre Jordan. The Clippers will still be a top eight team next season and will be in the playoffs.

Pierce should walk away. There is nothing left for him to play for except for another ring. Pierce knows he will not be the starter and will have to come off the bench because he is an aging star. His skills are diminishing. His decision will be coming in the next few weeks and it won’t be a surprise to me if he hangs his sneakers up.
