The Denver Broncos need to make some tough decisions before free agency starts on March 14th. They are going to look to shed salary in order to sign free agents. One player who could be on his way out is wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.
Sanders has been with the Broncos since 2014. In that time he has 4,126 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns. Broncos’ quarterbacks can count on Sanders to catch the football. He rarely drops it when it is in his hands. His average yards per catch is an impressive 13.6.
The problem with Sanders was his production slipped last season. It was not all Sanders’ fault as the Broncos had a tough time moving the football on offense. Sanders totaled 47 catches and 555 yards.
If the Broncos were to trade or cut Sanders, he has 2 years and $11 million left on his deal, a lot of money for another team to take on or even dead cap space. The Broncos would be taking a huge risk by cutting him because a divisional rival might sign him. The Broncos wouldn’t want to face Sanders two times a year because he could burn the Broncos with his play.
For the Broncos trading or cutting Sanders doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Sanders is one of their top wide receivers. They know what he brings to the table. The best way to fix the situation is to ask him to take a pay cut. Sanders could say no and the Broncos will then need to figure out what to do with him, which could be to deal him to another team. Hopefully the Broncos figure out a way to conserve cap space by keeping Sanders. General Manager John Elway will decide what is best for the Denver Broncos moving forward to make it back to the postseason.
