Denver Broncos Find Their Replacement For Defensive End Vance Walker?

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos were in desperate need of a veteran defensive tackle after Vance Walker tore his ACL last week. The Broncos only had veterans Jared Crick and Billy Winn, and rookie Adam Gotsis to replace Walker. They were thin at the position. The Broncos added depth by signing defensive end Henry Melton. In order for the Broncos to make room for him on the roster they had to waive offensive guard Sam Carlson. Who is Henry Melton?

Melton has plenty of NFL experience, playing for six years. He has appeared in 80 games for three teams, the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Melton’s best year came in 2011 with the Bears. He sacked the quarterback 7 times.   The very next year with the Bears, Melton had 6 sacks, which helped him get voted into the Pro Bowl for the only time in his career.

Last season Melton appeared in all 16 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recording 30 total tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Melton has shown in his NFL career that he can sack the quarterback with a total of 22.5. He can also tackle with a total of 134.

I think this is a decent move for the Denver Broncos. They are still looking for a defensive tackle and Melton was available. He can get after the quarterback which could assist this defense in making life difficult for the opposing teams.   Those sacks might be the difference in field position.

The surprising part is that he was still available. Melton is a defensive tackle that every NFL team should want. He can sack the quarterback, tackle, and force fumbles. The Denver Broncos might have a steal with Melton if he can perform like he did with the Bears. They will need Melton to stop the run as well. With him, the Broncos have replaced Walker on paper. It is a matter of Melton showing up and performing.

What do you think of the Denver Broncos signing Henry Melton?
