The Denver Broncos lost to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday 27-24. The Broncos dropped to 7-1. With 2:35 left in the game, Denver Broncos stopped Frank Gore for a gain of two yards on 2nd and 9 at the Broncos 13 yard line. It was going to set up 3rd and 7 but Aqib Talib received a personal foul for poking Colts’ tight end Dwayne Allen in the eye as well as a second personnel foul for shouting at the referees. Both were enforced half the distance to the goal, costing Denver a chance to try to win the game.
According to Yahoosports.com, Talib said, “From my angle, I see (Allen) head-butt Von a little bit. I went over to poke his head, and I think my hand slipped and hit his face. He acted like he got in an 18-passenger car wreck. I guess that’s what type of guy he is.”
Dwayne Allen saw it differently. ESPN stated that Allen said, “You’re taught since little league football to play to the whistle within the boundaries of the game. I just felt like Aqib, who is a heckuva player, Pro Bowl player, a guy of his caliber I look up to, went outside the boundary of the game and decided to take a cheap shot.”
Aqib Talib wasn’t the only reason the Broncos lost, but the penalties allowed the Colts to keep the ball and run the clock out. There was no rationale for him to poke him in the eye. Talib did it on purpose, his finger didn’t slip, and he knew what he was doing. He walked right to Allen and put his finger in his eye.
The video doesn’t lie. The NFL will look at it. Talib deserves a fine over this. The biggest problem with the Denver Broncos defense is they aren’t disciplined. They are called on too many personal foul penalties. That is on the coaching staff. Head Coach Gary Kubiak must address this, otherwise it will keep occurring. This was the first time it ended up costing them the game.
What kind of fine should Aqib Talib get? How should the Denver Broncos eliminate their personal foul penalty problem on defense?
