The Denver Broncos added another quarterback to the roster. The Broncos have 3 already, Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, and Chad Kelly, not enough to survive the full season especially if one of them is hurt during the season. The Broncos decided to sign rookie quarterback Nick Stevens who went undrafted during this years’ NFL Draft.
Stevens played his college football up the road at Colorado State University. During his college career, from 2014 to 2017, Stevens proved he could throw the football. He tossed 70 touchdowns, a CSU record. Stevens didn’t force the ball down field and rarely made a mistake with only 27 interceptions.
Looking at Stevens’ numbers those are respectable. A team should have drafted him with a chance for Stevens to become the quarterback of the future but they all passed. Stevens was given a shot during rookie minicamps with the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins but nether one decided to give him a contract.
Denver is a decent fit for Stevens. He will have the opportunity to compete for the backup quarterback position from day one. Stevens needs make an impression during training camp and preseason games. He must outplay Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly to make the team which might be difficult.
If Stevens isn’t able to win the backup quarterback job, the Broncos could place him on the practice squad which isn’t the worst case scenario. He can practice with the team during the week. Stevens won’t suit up on game day unless he is signed to the roster. The Broncos need depth and Stevens may provide it.
