The Denver Broncos are preparing to take on the Chicago Bears tomorrow night in their first preseason game. The biggest battle is for the starting quarterback position between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. 104.3 The Fan radio personality Sandy Clough suggested that the Broncos are not happy with either one and are pursuing a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals for backup AJ McCarron. According to bleacherreport.com, General Manager John Elway tweeted saying “Rumor of us being interested in anyone other than the QBs we have is another example of irresponsible, fake news!!” Let’s say this is true. Who is the best among the three?
Trevor Siemian is entering his third season, all with the Denver Broncos. He has passed for 3,401 yards and 18 touchdowns. Siemian appeared in 14 games last season. Siemian did a decent job for his first time as a full-time starter. He was reading the defenses and finding the open receiver but Siemian was taking chances throwing into double coverage which were picked off. Siemian will look to improve on his game this year.
Paxton Lynch heads into his second season and with new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Lynch started 3 games in his rookie year while Siemian dealt with a shoulder injury. In those games Lynch wasn’t reading the defense as well and was holding onto the ball way to long. That allowed the defenses to read his eyes and knock passes down. He passed for 497 with 2 touchdowns but was picked off 1 time. Lynch looked like a rookie. Hopefully his game will improve this season.
AJ McCarron is in his 3rd season with the Bengals. McCarron doesn’t have as much playing time as Siemian, starting in 7 games, spending most of his career backing up Andy Dalton. In those games he tossed for 854 yards and 6 touchdowns. McCarron reads the defenses well and won’t turn the ball over with a total of 2 interceptions.
The Broncos are better off sticking with the young quarterbacks they have. A trade might require Denver to give up a draft pick next season which It could be as high as the 2nd round. That would be too high of a draft pick to give up for a player in McCarron who has hardly played in his 3 years in the NFL.
The Broncos are not going to trade for McCarron. Sandy Clough is trying to create more controversy. The Broncos know what they have at the quarterback position and will move forward with them. Hopefully their play improves this season.
What do you think about Sandy Clough’s comments? Should the Broncos pursue a trade for AJ McCarron?
