De’Von Achane Hurt, A Blow To The Miami Dolphins’ Ground Game

By Jordan Long

The Miami Dolphins sit at 4-1, on top of the AFC East Division.  They take on the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.  Miami will be without running back De’Von Achane. His recovery time is unknown, but it won’t be a season ending injury.  Achane may be headed to injured reserve.  If that is the case, he will miss the next 4 weeks if placed on it.

Achane is in his first year with the Dolphins.  Miami took him in the 3rd round of this year’s NFL draft. Achane wasn’t active for Miami’s week one matchup against the Chargers.  His first ever action in an NFL regular season game was in week 2 against New England.  He had one carry for 5 yards.

Achane made his mark in week 3 when Miami faced Denver.  He had 203 rushing yards with an average yards per rush of 11.3 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Last week, during Miami’s 31-16 victory, Achane rushed for 151 yards.  His average yards per rush was 13.7 yards.  Achane hurt his knee during the win.  It is unclear when it happened.

According to ESPN.com, Head Coach Mike McDaniel said, “It’s just something we’re treating that we’ll get more information on. He was in and out of the game, a standard rotation. … He thought he might have something but he’s such a tough kid. It was kind of tough to read, so we needed to evaluate more and that’s what we’re doing today.”

This could be a big loss for the Dolphins. Achane has totaled 460 rushing yards so far this year ranking second only to Christian McCaffrey who has 510.  Achane leads the league with an average rush yards of 12.1.

With him sidelined, they will have to rely on Raheem Mostert. Mostert can carry the load and has shown that this year.  He has rushed for 314 yards and 7 touchdowns.  The Dolphins will trust him in the running game even though he is not the same runner as Achane.  The Dolphins will look to keep the running game going even with Achane out of the lineup.
