On Monday, the L.A. Dodgers upgraded their bullpen. They agreed to trade two prospects who will be named later to Cincinnati for Aroldis Chapman. The deal is awaiting Chapman’s passing a medical examination.
On paper this should help the Dodgers. Chapman has been one of the best closers in the game. Last season, he saved 33 games for a Reds’ team that only won 64 games. He added 116 strikeouts with an ERA of 1.63. Chapman has played 6 years, all with the Reds. In his career he saved 146 games, has 546 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.17. He averages 15.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Dodgers are receiving a stellar closer. He is one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the game today. According to ESPN, his fastest pitches ranged from 102.36 MPH to 103.92 MPH.
The only problem with this transaction is the Dodgers already have a closer. Kenley Jansen recorded 36 saves this past season and 44 in 2014. The only difference between Jansen and Chapman is that Jansen can’t strike batters out as often with only 80 last season.
The Dodgers wanted to upgrade their closer position. This is a move that accomplishes that. The Dodgers didn’t have to give up a lot for Chapman. Chapman is a proven closer who will help win tight games for the Dodgers next season and assist them in winning games. Jansen should be the setup man and pitch the 8th inning. That would take pressure off of Chapman to be the only bullpen pitcher to strike batters out. If Chapman can’t get the job done as the closer, Jansen might eventually get his chance to continue to close games. This should help the Dodgers win games next year.
