Fred Davis Heads To New England

The New England Patriots signed tight end Fred Davis to a one-year deal. Davis has played in the NFL since 2008. He missed all of last season because of a second violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Davis was reinstated four days ago. This is not a good move for him.

Fred Davis is an excellent tight end. In his career he has 162 catches for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns. Davis is a reliable tight end who can also block.

Davis should have decided to play somewhere else. He may not see the field that much. The Patriots already have five tight ends on the roster. Those are Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler, Michael Hoomanawanui, Tim Wright, and rookie AJ Derby. Rob Gronkowski and Scott Chandler are probably going to be the starters at tight end. Where is Davis going to fit in on this team? Davis will have to rise in the depth chart during the preseason. It’s going to be tough. Only three to four tight ends are going to make the roster.

Davis should have agreed to play somewhere else. A team who could have used him at tight end is Cleveland. The Browns only have four tight ends on the roster: Gary Barnidge, Jim Dray, Rob Housler, and Randall Telfer. The Browns best tight end is Rob Housler who has 105 receptions for 1,133 yards and one touchdown in his career.

If Davis went to Cleveland, he would have competed for the number one tight end position. There isn’t a question that he could be a starter on the Browns. He didn’t want to go to Cleveland and they might not have been interested.

A reason he didn’t go to the Browns could be that the Browns don’t have a solid starting quarterback. They aren’t in position to win now or to compete to win the AFC North. The Patriots have the talent to win now and are always winning the AFC East.   They also have future Hall Of Fame quarterback Tom Brady who, as long as he isn’t suspended for “deflate gate”, will throw Davis the ball. Davis has the talent to make the Patriots. He will have to prove that in the preseason.

Will Fred Davis make the Patriots roster? Where should he have played this season?
