The Denver Nuggets agreed to a contract extension with one of their young stars, Gary Harris. The deal is 4 years, and $84 million, paying him $21 million a year. Harris will be in a Nuggets uniform until 2022. What kind of deal is this for Harris?
Harris enters his 4th year with the Denver Nuggets. Last season was his best year averaging 14.9 points, 2.9 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. Harris was the starter at shooting guard. The Nuggets trusted him to find his teammates on the open floor for easy buckets. Harris could also drive the lane to score.
He was not only an offensive player, but worked on his defense. Harris boxed out and grabbed rebounds to start fast breaks. He created steals, which equaled easy buckets for the Nuggets.
The Denver Nuggets needed to make this deal. Denver had until October 16 for a contract extension. If they hadn’t, Denver needed to wait until July to talk to him again. Denver is overpaying for Harris but they had to. Harris is becoming one of the top young shooting guards in the league. They didn’t want to allow him to test free agency.
On paper this is a great deal for the Nuggets. They will keep their young core of Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Emmanuel Mudiay, and Gary Harris for years to come. The core is only going to improve in the next few years which is scary for the rest of the NBA. They might be the team to beat.
The Denver Nuggets look like a team who will compete for a championship in the next 4 years. The only way this won’t work is if Harris is hurt and his numbers decline. For the Nuggets, they are hoping Harris stays on the court and brings a title back to Denver.
What do you think of the Nuggets reaching an extension with Gary Harris?
