On Tuesday, the Houston Texans released backup quarterback Ryan Mallet. Cbssports.com stated that Mallett had missed the teams’ charter flight to Miami on Saturday because he was caught in traffic and was forced to fly commercially. This is not the first time Mallett was late. According to abcnews.com, during the end of training camp, he missed a practice. Mallett said he overslept and didn’t hear his alarm because his cell phone died. He told General Manager Rick Smith that it would never happen again. The Texans decided that Hoyer would be the starter for week one but he and Mallet jockeyed back and forth for the position. Why would the Texans make this move now?
Mallet has been in Houston since 2014. The Texans traded a draft pick to New England for Mallet. That year he played in three games and threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. This year Mallet has thrown for 700 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Those are not great numbers and he has struggled.
ESPN said that Head Coach Bill O’Brian was upset and wanted to cut him on Saturday. He was talked into keeping him on the roster because that would have forced the Texans to only have one active quarterback. Sunday, the Texans lost 44-26
The Texans must have thought they couldn’t trust Ryan Mallet. First he missed a team meeting due to over sleeping. This time he missed a flight. The Texans felt he had shown that he wasn’t responsible. He is not acting like a leader nor does it show that he is a dependable quarterback, but there must have been more behind the scenes happening than this. These couldn’t have been the only two incidents.
The Texans are in awful shape at quarterback now. They have two quarterbacks on the active roster, starter Brian Hoyer and T.J. Yates. Tom Savage, the Texans’ 2014 fourth round pick is on injured reserve and Zac Dysert is on the practice squad.
Yates was in a Texans uniform from 2011 to 2013 when he appeared in 13 games. In those games he threw for 1,100 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. Yates is a reliable backup. The only issue he has is fumbling, losing six. The Texans must feel like they can trust Yates more than Mallett.
What do you think of the Texans letting Mallet go?
