Jim Harbaugh Back In The NFL? L.A. Chargers Interview Him For Their Head Coaching Vacancy

By Jordan Long

The L.A. Chargers finished the season at a disappointing 5-12.  The Chargers even fired Head Coach Brandon Staley 14 games into the season.  At the time they were 5-9.  The Chargers have started their search to replace Staley, interviewing the University of Michigan Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh has been at the University of Michigan since 2015.  His overall record there is an impressive 89-25, a winning percentage of .781.  Harbaugh was able to coach the University of Michigan to the College Football Playoff the past three years.  In 2022, they were beaten in the semifinal by the University of Georgia. The final score was 34 to 11. The University of Georgia beat the University of Alabama in the National Championship Game. Last year, TCU beat the University of Michigan in the semifinal 51-45.

This year the University of Michigan cruised through the regular season with a 12-0 record.  They defeated the University of Iowa in the Big 10 Championship Game, 26-0.  They were selected as the #1 team in the College Football Playoff. The University of Michigan got past the University of Alabama in overtime, 27-20, advancing to the National Championship Game.  In the National Championship Game, they beat the University of Washington, 34-13.  This was Harbaugh’s first National Championship title as a college coach.

Harbaugh accomplished everything in the college game.  He has an itch to go back to the NFL game.  Harbaugh coached in the NFL before with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014.  He was successful with a 44-19-1 record or an outstanding winning percentage of .695.  The 49ers went to 3 playoff appearances with Harbaugh.  The 49ers even advanced to Super Bowl  47 falling to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31. For whatever reason, the 49ers fired him after an 8-8 finish in 2014.

The Chargers franchise is familiar with Harbaugh.  Harbaugh played for the Chargers from 1999 to 2000.  His record as their starting quarterback was 6-11.

The Chargers are going to take their time finding their next Head Coach and interview other candidates.  Harbaugh is a great choice.  If the Chargers hire Harbaugh, hopefully, he can help them win a Super Bowl.  The Chargers never won a Super Bowl but appeared in one, Super Bowl 29. The ultimate goal is to be Super Bowl Champions.
