Joe Flacco Extended in Baltimore, He Is Worth It?

The Baltimore Ravens extended quarterback Joe Flacco for 3 more years. The deal is worth $66.4 million with $44 million guaranteed. He will also receive a $40 million signing bonus. This will keep Flacco in a Baltimore uniform until 2021. According to ESPN, Flacco said, “Once this thing is signed and over with it, [winning] is all that we’re worried about. This gives us the best chance to move forward over the next five, six years. It’s a huge window to go win another Super Bowl.” Is this even a decent deal?

Flacco has been the starting quarterback of the Ravens since 2008. In his career he has thrown for 28,322 yards, 162 touchdowns, and 102 interceptions. Flacco has won 85 games, including the playoffs, which ranks fourth since he entered the league. The passing yards and touchdown passes are number one in Ravens’ history. Flacco also won a Super Bowl in 2013.

Flacco is an above average quarterback. His stats say it all but the Ravens were too quick to give him an extension.   Flacco played poorly last season, appearing in ten games the lowest in his career. An ACL injury in week 11 ended his season. In those games he passed for 2,791 yards with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The passing yards were the fewest he ever threw for.

The Ravens should have let him play one more season before they added to his deal his deal. He had a down season and yet they are taking a risk that he will improve. Flacco needs to show the Ravens that last season was a fluke.   What happens if he struggles again next year? Baltimore will still have to pay him.

On the flipside, Flacco is a better quarterback than what Baltimore could get in the draft and in free agency. They are overpaying for him but they had to. They didn’t want to risk losing him in free agency because he might be the key for their success on the field. This was a deal they had to make. Flacco got paid and he needs to perform on the football field. The only way of doing that is to lead this team to the playoffs and past the first round.
