Black Monday in the NFL is 2 weeks away. This is where teams fire their current Head Coaches and look for a new one to take over. Right now, there are two jobs open, the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. They will be looking to interview for their vacancies but more jobs should be available. One coordinator they could talk to is the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots Josh McDaniels.
McDaniels might be gaining interest due to the play of rookie quarterback Mac Jones. Jones is in the conversation for offensive rookie of the year. In McDaniels’ system, Jones has passed for 3,313 yards and 18 touchdowns. Sure Jones has thrown interceptions but he is trying to read NFL defenses and has thrown the ball into double coverage. Those have equaled 12 interceptions. With McDaniels’ play calls combined with Jones’ play under center, New England is 9-6. They are currently the 6th seed in the AFC playoffs but should earn a playoff spot.
For McDaniels, he might be a top candidate for a Head Coaching opening. He knows offenses and the results have been there for New England. The Patriots have always been a playoff and Super Bowl threat with him as the offensive coordinator. A franchise looking for a Head Coach should give him a chance to interview to see what he could bring the their team. Of course, if he passes the interview process, McDaniels might be their next Head Coach.
McDaniels at least has NFL Head Coaching experience with the Denver Broncos. It didn’t go so well. He was in the Mile High City from 2009 to 12 games into the 2010 season. The Broncos were an atrocious 11-17 under him, a winning percentage of .393. He had his chance to become the Colts Head Coach during the 2018 offseason. McDaniels accepted the job but backed out of it and returned to New England. It worked out for the Colts though as they hired Frank Reich who has a record of 37-26 with them. The Colts earned a playoff spot twice with Reich.
McDaniels could have an opportunity to become a Head Coach in the NFL. The problem is should he be? Franchises want a guy who will stick around. In his last opportunity, he backed out. Would he do the same thing? McDaniels is better off waiting until Head Coach Bill Belichick retires. It seems he wants the New England job and is the coach of the future. McDaniels will do what is best for himself but staying in New England appears to be the right move. Then again maybe a team will try to lure him from New England with a contract he can’t refuse.
