The L.A. Chargers fell to 1-1 on the season after a tough fought overtime 23-20 loss to Kansas City. The Chargers started rookie Justin Herbert. Their number 1 quarterback on the depth chart, Tyrod Taylor, was taken to the hospital in pregame warmups after he had difficulty breathing. Chargers may have a quarterback controversy.
Herbert played well yesterday. He was 22 of 33 for 311 yards. Herbert found his receivers downfield and wasn’t throwing in double coverage. He tossed 1 touchdown and 1 pick in the loss. Herbert scrambled for 18 yards.
In the Chargers’ week 1 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, Taylor finished the game 16 of 30. He had 208 yards passing but didn’t throw a touchdown or an interception. Taylor totaled 7 yards rushing.
The Chargers already know who their quarterback will be in week 3 against the Panthers. According to CBSsports.com, Head Coach Anthony Lynn said “I’m gonna wait and see what type of health Tyrod is in. He was our starter for a reason, and if he’s 100 percent, ready to go, he’s our starter. But I know that Justin can pick up the slack if he can’t.”
Taylor should be the starter. He has more experience in the NFL than Herbert. This is Taylor’s 10th season in the NFL. Herbert is a rookie. Taylor’s knowledge gives him the edge.
The NFL is a “what have you done for me lately” league. Herbert played against one of the toughest defenses in the league, the Kansas City Chiefs. He was able to move the ball downfield and find his open receivers. The Chargers scored more points with Herbert at 20 than they did with Taylor at 16. The difference is Taylor helped win the game he started.
Lynn shouldn’t be too quick to say who his starter is this week when they face the Carolina Panthers. He should first wait and see how practice goes this week. It seems like as long as Taylor is working with the number 1 offense, he is set to start again. If he struggles or can’t go, Herbert showed he can be the quarterback for the Chargers for this year and beyond.
