L.A. Chargers Squander A Big Lead Against the Denver Broncos, Time For L.A. To Let Go Of Head Coach Anthony Lynn

By Jordan Long

On Sunday the L.A. Chargers dropped to 2-5 on the year after a 31-30 loss to the Denver Broncos.  The defeat came right as time expired.  The Chargers organization should think about firing Head Coach Anthony Lynn.

Lynn was hired prior to the 2017 season.  He didn’t have much head coaching experience in the NFL.  Lynn was the interim Head Coach for the Bills in 2016 after the Bills fired Rex Ryan with 1 game left.  The Bills dropped that final game 30-14 to the New York Jets.  Buffalo went a different direction and the Chargers thought Lynn was the right man for the job to help turn the team into a winner.

In 2017 the Chargers went 9-7 but missed the playoffs.  The next year they ended 12-4 and advanced to the AFC Divisional round but fell to the New England Patriots 41-22.  Last season they were 5-11.  This year they are at 2-5. His overall record isn’t bad at 28-27, a winning percentage of .509.

The Chargers haven’t learned to finish games.  In week 2, they led the Kansas City Chiefs by as many as 11 points but lost the game in overtime 23-20.  Against Tampa Bay, they were ahead 17 points in the second quarter but it was the same result, a loss.  Tampa Bay outscored the Chargers 31 to 7 the rest of the way.  Tampa Bay won the game 38-31. It was more of the same against the New Orleans Saints.  They were up by 17 in the second quarter but found a way to lose that game 30-27.

Sunday’s loss was the worst one of them all.  The Chargers were dominant for 3 quarters, outscoring the Broncos 24-3 midway through the 3rd quarter.   The Broncos caught fire and outscored the Chargers 28 to 6 the rest of the way, winning the game 31-30.

The Chargers haven’t learned to finish games under Lynn.  For most franchises, that is enough to fire a coach.  The Chargers’ front office seems to be willing to let Lynn finish the season.  The problem is how many more leads do they have to blow to make a switch at head coach?  The season isn’t lost yet.  They need to learn to finish games when they are ahead, otherwise Lynn could be let go soon.
