The L.A. Dodgers are still searching for a manager after Don Mattingly resigned on October 22nd. According to CBS.com, Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts are the favorites for the job. Who makes the most sense to manage the Dodgers?
Gabe Kapler doesn’t have managerial experience in Major League Baseball. The only on field baseball knowledge he has is as a player. He spent 12 years playing for 6 different teams. Kapler is currently the Dodger’s Director of Player Development.
Dave Roberts is the more logical choice. Roberts has served as the Bench Coach for the San Diego Padres for the last two seasons. That may not be managerial experience but it’s more than what Kapeler has. There are two candidates that the Dodgers have interviewed who have managed in Major League Baseball, Bud Black and Ron Roenicke.
Bud Black managed the San Diego Padres for the past nine years. He had a record of 649-713. The Padres never made it to the playoffs in those nine years. They were knocked off by the Colorado Rockies in 2007, 9-8 in the Wild Card Tiebreaker game. The Rockies would go on to capture the National League
Pennant that year. Black was fired this year after a 32-33 start.
Ron Roenicke was the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. He was there for 5 years. The Brewers went 342-331. They made the playoffs in 2011 and went all the way to the National League Championship Series before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in six games. The Cardinals would win the World Series that year.
The L.A. Dodgers are a talented team on paper. All this team really needs is a manager to guide them. If they want to be successful they should go with Ron Roenicke or Bud Black.
Who should be the next manager of the L.A. Dodgers?
