Linebacker Chad Greenway Calls It A Career After 11 NFL Seasons

By Jordan Long

Minnesota Vikings’ linebacker Chad Greenway is walking away from football. He knew last season was his last. Greenway played 11 years in the NFL, all with the Vikings.

Greenway was selected by the Vikings in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft. In his first year he proved to be a player who the Vikings could count on to tackle in the open field. He recorded 105 tackles. Greenway was able to cause turnovers with 2 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions. In 2008 Greenway elevated his game by being able to sack the quarterback with 5.5 sacks, the most in his career.

Last season was a year to forget for Greenway. He had a career low 41 tackles. Greenway knew at the end of the season it was time for him to retire from the game of football. He ends his career with 1,101 tackles, 18 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and 11 interceptions.

Greenway was selected to two Pro Bowls. He was also voted onto the Second-Team All-Pro team on 2012. The only thing missing from his resume is a Super Bowl ring but he never appeared in one. The closest he was to the big game was in 2010 when the Vikings lost to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game 31-28.

Greenway was a decent NFL linebacker. Opposing quarterbacks needed to pay attention to where he was on the field. Greenway could come on a blitz to sack the quarterback, play in coverage on passing plays, and stop the running game.

Greenway will be remembered as an above average linebacker. His numbers aren’t respectable enough for him to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.   He was a player that competed at a high level and played the game the right way. Greenway will be missed as a leader on the Minnesota Vikings.
