The Denver Broncos had a void to fill when Danny Trevathan agreed to a four year, $28 million contract with the Chicago Bears on March 9th. He was the leader of the defense and an outstanding linebacker. Earlier this week, the Broncos added depth at the position by signing Dekoda Watson.
Watson was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL Draft. In his first year he had a total of 31 tackles. He would stay in Tampa Bay for three more seasons where his total was 75 tackles. Watson added two forced fumbles and three sacks. At the conclusion of the 2013, season he left Tampa Bay and agreed to come to Jacksonville. He appeared in nine games making 14 tackles before the Jaguars decided to release him. On May 12, 2015 the Patriots agreed to a contract with him. Watson has appeared in 72 career games with 122 combined tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
Watson will assist the linebackers. He may not be an every down player, but the Broncos are hoping they have a solid tackler who won’t miss an opponent in the open field. The Denver Post stated that Watson will be an inside linebacker. This will help the Broncos defense since they are in need of an inside linebacker.
If Watson can’t be the starter, he should see plenty of playing time at special teams. He has experience with special teams making 39 tackles in his career. Those tackles could have been the difference in field position.
Watson is a veteran player who can help them bring another title to the Mile High City. It will be up to him to prove that he can be in this defense. On paper his ability should assist the Broncos to win football games this upcoming season.
What do you think of the Broncos adding Dekoda Watson?
