Matt Flynn’s NFL Journey

The New England Patriots have released backup quarterback Matt Flynn. He was going to compete for the third string quarterback job. This was his fourth team in the last eight years. What has happened to Matt Flynn?

Matt Flynn played his college football at LSU. During his four years, he threw for 3,096 yards and 31 touchdowns, hardly turning the ball over with 13 interceptions. Flynn helped LSU knock off Ohio State in the BCS National Championship in 2008, 38-24. He was picked by the Green Bay Packers in the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Flynn didn’t do much his first three seasons. He threw for a total of 497 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 picks. The last game of the 2011 season, Flynn started at quarterback. The Packers weren’t playing for anything as they already wrapped up home field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs. Flynn had his best day as a professional quarterback throwing for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns, which set a Green Bay Packers record.

In the offseason that year he signed a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks. It was worth $26 million with $10 million guaranteed. He was supposed to vie for the starting job. The Seahawks already had Tarvaris Jackson and drafted Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson earned the job and hasn’t looked back.

The Seahawks traded Flynn to the Raiders in 2013. It didn’t last long. They released him in October. In November Green Bay signed him.   Through five games he played well, throwing for 1,146 yards and 7 touchdowns but had 4 interceptions. At the end of the year, the Packers rewarded Flynn with a one-year deal worth $1.07 million.

Last year he only threw for 66 yards. He agreed in June to come to the New England Patriots. They were hoping he could provide a veteran presence on the bench. The Patriots decided to cut him today and signed Ryan Lindley.

Flynn really never had the opportunity to prove himself with the New England Patriots. He was on the non-football injury list and never practiced during training camp. The Patriots have no idea what they had in him because they didn’t give him a chance.

Flynn might be a backup quarterback his whole NFL career. The team that should sign him is the Green Bay Packers. In football, the backup quarterback is one hit away from seeing action on the field. The Packers know how he plays. The other teams who could be in the mix are the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and the New York Giants.   These teams could use a veteran backup quarterback like Matt Flynn.

What team will Matt Flynn end up playing for this year?
