The Buffalo Sabers stand at 6-17-4 for total of 16 points, the least amount of points in the NHL. With the slow start, the Sabers have decided to shake up their roster. They waved forward Matt Moulson.
Moulson has one more year on his contract with a base salary of $5 million. The Sabers were hoping that his play would increase from the 14 goals and 18 assists he had last year. This year has been a disappointment for Moulson. He was a healthy scratch in 7 of Buffalo’s last 9 games. Moulson appeared in only 14 games this season. He has not been the effective scorer with 0 points this season. The Sabers needed to make this move.
By placing him on wavers, any team can claim him. Moulson can be a scorer for a team, even though he hasn’t shown it this season. In the past he can play on the power play and full strength. Moulson’s speed creates scoring chances. He has scored 176 goals and added 193 assists for a total of 369 points. On the power play, Moulson has the ability to set up in front of the goaltender for tip-ins and feed his teammates for scoring chances. In his career he has a total of 64 power play goals and 60 power play assists. He can help any team.
It is possible Moulson will go unclaimed. If that is the case, he must report to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. He must work on his game and will have a chance to play himself back into the NHL.
This is a smart move for the Sabers. Moulson hasn’t been able to do anything when he has been in a Sabers’ uniform. This is a wake up call for him. Hopefully, he will play improved hockey for Rochester and have the opportunity to appear for the Sabers again.
