The Memphis Grizzlies start training camp on October 1st. One member of the team will not be there, small forward Andre Iguodala. Memphis is looking to trade him.
On July 10, Memphis acquired Iguodala and a protected 1st round draft pick in exchange for forward Julian Washburn. Iguodala spent the previous 6 years with the Golden State Warriors. Golden State needed to deal Iguodala because of his salary cap number in order to make a sign and trade for D’Angelo Russell. Iguodala was due to make around $17.2 million this upcoming season.
Memphis is looking for any way to make sure Iguodala is not on the team. They are looking trade him. It could take some time for that to happen.
According to CBSsports.com, Iguodala said, “We’re trying to figure out things on both sides,” stated Iguodala. “They’re trying to figure out some things, and I’m trying to figure out some things. As of today, we’re on the same page. Camp opens the next week. We’ll See. We’re on the same page, though.”
Memphis shouldn’t have made the move for Iguodala. It was a waste of a trade and cap space if they don’t want him to play for them. They were better off cutting him right after the trade. This would allow Iguodala to find a team he wants to play for. Instead they are holding on to him even though he may not play for them this season.
Memphis is better off buying him out even though they probably won’t. A buyout is not the worst solution. Sure Memphis wouldn’t be getting something in return for him but his cap number would be off their books. It makes sense.
Memphis might not find a trade partner before the season starts on October 23rd. Iguodala could be forced to start the year with them. He may not play hard for Memphis because he is unhappy there. Memphis will deal him before the trade deadline on February 6th. Hopefully Memphis finds a way to ship Iguodala out of town soon so they can focus on making the playoffs this upcoming season.
