Metropolitan Football Stadium District Renames Stadium, Time To Stay With Mile High

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos open training camp July 28th. Their first preseason game at home is on August 11 when they face the Minnesota Vikings. When that occurs, the football stadium will have a temporary new name, Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

The arena is searching for a new naming rights sponsor. This is the third name change since 2001 when it opened. First it was INVESCO Field at Mile High. This lasted from 2001 to 2011. INVESCO decided to drop the rights and agreed to let Sports Authority take over.

Sports Authority settled on a 25-year agreement with the Metropolitan Football Stadium District which began August 11, 2011. Unfortunately the deal didn’t last long.   Sports Authority declared bankruptcy on March 2nd 2016. The Broncos kept the name until January 8th of this year.

For the past two years, the Broncos have tried looking for a sponsor. It has yet to happen. Companies may shy away because of the history of businesses not doing so well after they place their name on it. Sure these sponsors are important, especially when it comes to upgrades to the stadium.

It will take a while for them to find a corporation willing to agree to the rights. Why not go back and call it Mile High Stadium? It wouldn’t be that difficult. A lot of Broncos’ fans call it that anyway. The sponsor doesn’t need to be part of the name. They have tried that a few times with little success. Hopefully, the Metropolitan Football Stadium District will leave the name alone.
