The Golden State Warriors, fresh off their upset loss in the NBA finals, offered the top assistant job to Mike Brown. Luke Walton, the top assistant coach last season, was hired as the Lakers Head Coach. Brown was one of two finalists for the job. The other was Ty Corbin, who decided to go to Phoenix to join the Suns’ staff.
Brown is an experienced choice to replace Walton. He has been an assistant coach as well as head coach in the NBA. Brown was the assistant coach with Washington from 1997 to 1999. In 2000 he went to the Spurs. He was in San Antonio until 2003.
Brown made his name by coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers. His first stint as Head Coach was with the Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010. They made the playoffs six times under Brown, reaching the NBA finals in 2007 where they were swept by the Spurs. Brown was fired by Cleveland after the 2010 season.
The Lakers had a job opening in 2012. They hired Brown and went 41-25 in the lockout-shortened season. The Lakers made the playoffs as the third seed in the West. They would win their first-round series against the Denver Nuggets in seven games before falling to Oklahoma City in the second-round in five games. Brown was fired, five games into the 2012 to 2013 season. He wasn’t out of basketball for long. The Cavaliers rehired him as head coach for one season in 2013 going 33-49.
The Warriors will now have essentially two head coaches on the bench if Brown decides to take the job, Steve Kerr and Mike Brown. Brown will be able to inform Kerr about what he is seeing on the court. That advice might help Kerr in making adjustments during games. He could also tell the players on the bench what they could do to improve their game. This all could help the Warriors win games next season. It will be up to Brown to take the job. It is one of the top jobs out there.
