Mike MacIntyre Agrees To An Extension, Will Stay In Boulder Until 2021

By Jordan Long

The University of Colorado is expected to approve Head Football Coach Mike MacIntyre’s extension this week. The deal is three years and worth $16.5 million, paying him around $5.41 million a year. His current agreement is set to expire in 2018. Once it’s official, he will be in Boulder, Colorado until at least the end of the 2021 season.

MacIntyre has been with the University of Colorado since 2013. Colorado didn’t have much success on the field from 2013 to 2015 with a combined record of 10-27. That all changed last season. Colorado had its’ first winning season since 2005 when they ended 7-6. They finished the season at 10-4 and an impressive 8-1 in conference play. The Buffalos won the Pac 12 South for the first time in school history. Unfortunately, they fell short of winning the Pac-12 Conference. They lost the Pac-12 Championship to the University of Washington 41-10. The Buffaloes appeared in a bowl game for the first time since 2007. They made it to the Alamo Bowl and were drummed by Oklahoma State 38-8.

It was a dream season for Colorado. They were ranked as high as #9 in the country. The Buffs finished the year ranked 17th. For all the on field success, MacIntyre was voted both AP National Coach Of The Year and Pac-12 Coach Of The year.

On paper it seems like an excellent contract. The Colorado Buffaloes are improving under MacIntyre and it showed last season. Colorado rewarded his hard work. If MaciItyre coaches the way he did last season, the Buffalos will be primed for another run, not only for the Pac-12 Title, but a playoff berth in the College Football Playoff.

The downside of the deal is MacIntyre could be fired if Colorado has a poor season anytime during his extension. The Buffalos are not shy about letting coaches go. In the past 11 years Colorado has had three coaches, Dan Hawkins, Jon Embree, and current coach MacIntyre. In order for him to stay in Boulder until 2021 he must deliver winning records, bowl games, and a Pac-12 Conference Title. If MacIntyre finishes with a few losing seasons, it could be the end of him in Boulder, Colorado.

What do you think of Colorado giving Mike MacIntyre a contract extension?
