Major League Baseball is in the first week. This is the time of year when teams believe they can win a World Series because it’s a new season. Fans head to the ballpark to watch their favorite team in action. The average ticket price at MLB parks rose 3.3 percent to $28.94, the largest in six years.
The most expensive tickets are the Boston Red Sox. A ticket will cost a fan on average $52.34. The New York Yankees are second at about $51.55. The Chicago Cubs, who are in the midst of a renovation project, have their ticket prices at $44.81.
These prices are still a lot less than going to an NFL, NBA, or NHL hockey game. A ticket for an NFL game last year averaged $84.43. A hockey game cost $62.18 while a basketball game was $53.98. It seems baseball is family friendly.
The Denver Nuggets have Family Night Outs, with 4 tickets, 4 food vouchers and four sodas for $88. That’s not a bad price. Fans can purchase tickets to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field for as a little as $4 to $14 depending on the game. That would equal four tickets for $16 to $56, not including food or parking. A fan could still spend less than $60 to take their family to a baseball game.
Baseball is a family friendly sport. Football is too expensive for many families to attend. A family of four might spend $400 for admission alone. Basketball and hockey have family packages but it’s still too expensive. A family can afford to watch a baseball game and enjoy good seats.
How can other sports make prices reasonable for families?
The ticket prices are such a small part of their income that all sports could make ticket prices reasonable if they wanted to.
Minor league baseball is the best. We have the Grand Junction Rockies, the rookie team for the Colorado Rockies. I think last year they had their tickets prices at $8 dollars. It’s nice to see minor league baseball being family friendly. If only MLB could do that.
