The New Jersey Devils and defenseman Damon Severson agreed to a new contract. It will be for 6 years and is worth $25 million, an average salary of $4.2 million a year. This keeps Severson in New Jersey until the 2022-2023 season. According to NHL.com, Devils General Manager Ray Shero said, “Damon brings an important dimension to our hockey club and he is a young defenseman that we are excited to work with. This deal shows our ownership’s commitment in what we continue to build here. We look forward to helping Damon continue to grow and develop as a player.”
Severson is entering his 4th NHL season, all with the Devils. Last year he logged a total of 20:21 per game of ice time, third on the team. He has been valuable for New Jersey on full strength and power play situations. On full strength, Severson checks opponents off the puck, eliminating scoring chances. He also blocks shots. On offense Severson scores from the point and finds his teammates on the open ice for them to put the puck in the back of the net. He has a total of 9 goals and 60 assists for a total of 69 points..
When the Devils are on the power play Severson plays near the blue line. There he shoots the puck towards the net hoping for a tip in. If not a tip in, he feeds his teammates close to the net for them to score. Severson has a total of 25 power play assists in his career.
Severson is young at 23 and was a restricted free agent this off-season. The Devils know his game is only going to grow. Last year he had career highs in assists and points with a total of 28 assists and 31 points. The Devils needed to keep Severson because he will be the leader of the defense for years to come. Hopefully New Jersey will create a winning team with Severson as their top defenseman.
