The New York Giants lost to the Oakland Raiders 24-17 on Sunday, dropping the Giants’ record to 2-10. After the game, there was speculation that Head Coach Ben McAdoo would be fired. According to NFL.com, McAdoo said after the game, “I’m going to coach this team as long as my key card works. You know, we’ve got a great group of players, the coaches, we’ve got a great staff to work with. We’re going to show up ready to go tomorrow and get this thing cleaned up and move on to the next one.” On Monday, the Giants decided it was best to move on from McAdoo.
McAdoo was hired by the New York Giants on January 15, 2016. This was after New York fired Tom Coughlin. McAdoo served as the offensive coordinator under Coughlin. This was great news for quarterback Eli Manning because the system would be the same. In his first year the Giants went 11-5 and made the playoffs as the first Wild-Card team. They lost to the Green Bay Packers 38-13 in the Wild-Card round.
This season, the Giants had bigger plans. They were going to compete to win the division and make a deep run in the playoffs. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The Giants started the season with 5 straight losses before they won their first game on the road against the Broncos. Their other win came against the Kansas City Chiefs at home in week 11.
Besides the awful beginning of the season, McAdoo was in charge of the offense. The offense was poor. They scored 15.8 points per game. They had a tough time running and passing the football with a total of 293.3 yards per game. McAdoo never fixed the offense and it was time for him to go. The last straw was this past week when he announced Eli Manning was going to be benched for Geno Smith. It didn’t change the result, as they suffered a loss against the Raiders.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be the interim coach the rest of the season. This is his opportunity to show the Giants he can be the Head Coach of this team. If the team wins a few games and plays improved football, Spagnuolo should be the favorite for the job.
