The New York Giants were drummed by the Minnesota Vikings 49-17 on Sunday Night Football. The loss dropped them to a record of 6-9. They will miss the playoffs this year. Media members are questioning whether or not the Giants ought to fire Head Coach Tom Coughlin. Should the Giants even consider doing this?
The New York Giants hired Tom Coughlin for the 2004 season. The Giants were 6-10 in his first season. The next year they improved to 11-5 and made the playoffs. The Giants would go to the playoffs with Coughlin five times, two of them ended up in Super Bowl wins. In the regular season, Coughlin has a career record of 102-89 with the Giants.
The past four years they have missed the playoffs. Last year they were 6-10 and if they lose next Sunday to the Philadelphia Eagles that would make them 6-10 for yet another year. According to NFL.com, Coughlin addressed his job security saying, “I am not worried about that. It will all take care of itself. I do not coach worrying about that.”
Sure they got blown out on Sunday, but they had nothing to play for. They were already eliminated because Washington won on Saturday to claim the NFC East division. The loss might be more on the players than the coaches.
The New York Giants ownership should let the last game play out. Once that is over sit down with Tom Coughlin to discuss the season and what went wrong. They should let him coach at least one more season to see if he can turn the Giants around.
The problem with firing him is there isn’t another head coach out there to lead this football team. Coughlin is the right coach for the job even though the last few years haven’t gone the way they have wanted. The Giants need to take a good hard look at his body of work and not the last few years. In the end though it’s up to the general manager and the ownership. They would make the wrong move by canning Coughlin but in the NFL it’s “what have you done for me lately?” Lately, they haven’t made the playoffs.
What should the New York Giants do with Tom Coughlin?
