All across NFL stadiums yesterday, players were kneeling and linking arms during the National Anthem. This was in hopes of bringing players together. Sure it did that, but it divided NFL fans because many felt this action was disrespectful to the American Flag.
I understand why people feel this way. Some people served in the military and fought for our freedom while others have family who were in the armed forces. It is a very political subject but the point of watching any sporting event or going to an NFL arena is to ignore real life and enjoy 3 hours of entertainment or more depending on how many games they decide to watch on a given Sunday.
The NFL is out there for fans to enjoy. They watch their favorite teams, wear NFL gear, and cheer them on hoping for a win either at the stadium or parked in front of their TV with a snack or beverage. There are others who spend hours on end tailgating before heading into the stadium. Once that whistle blows, it is all about enjoying the game.
People have forgotten that fact this week. They are more worried about the implications of what these role models are doing on the sidelines when they kneel for the anthem. Others have decided that by these competitors’ actions, that they won’t ever watch an NFL game again.
I have never thought about the NFL that way. On Sunday when I flip on the NFL on the TV, it is for me to forget what is going on in the world and watch these world-class athletes show their skills. Sure it makes me upset when my team, the Denver Broncos play an awful game but at least they are giving me 3 hours of distraction. That to me is what the NFL is and hopefully will continue to be rather than a political statement by the players.
Right on, Jordan! Leave the politics out. They should do that on their own time.
Thank you for the comment. I agree with you for sure.
