Nick Foles Might Hit Free Agency, Denver A Landing Spot For The Quarterback?

By Jordan Long

NFL free agency isn’t going to start until March 13th.   Nick Foles could be the biggest name in free agency.  Foles is under contract in 2019 by the Philadelphia Eagles, paying him $20 million.  He has an option in his deal where he can pay the Eagles $2 million to opt out and become a free agent.  If he decides to do so, many teams will be calling him including the Denver Broncos.

Denver hasn’t had a franchise quarterback since 2015 with Peyton Manning.  The Broncos signed Case Keenum last offseason hoping he could be the answer under center.  Unfortunately, Keenum wasn’t the answer.  He tossed for 3,890 yards the most in his career.  The problem with Keenum was his decision making.  He tried to force the ball to a covered wide receiver.   Those were either batted away for incompletions or interceptions with a total of 15 interceptions, far too many.

Denver needs another quarterback on the roster.  They only other quarterback besides Keenum who has a contract for 2019 is Garrett Grayson. Grayson has been in the NFL since 2015 but has yet to appear in a game.  He spent time with the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons but was on the practice squad.

This still means Denver needs to go after a quarterback.  If Foles becomes available, Denver must make the call.  Foles has 7 years of NFL experience.  In his career he has thrown for 11,165 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions.  Foles protects the football and could improve the Broncos offense. It isn’t a guarantee he would be the starter but Denver may have a quarterback competition between Foles and Keenum for the starting position.

The only problem with all this is Foles may stay with the Eagles.   If he declines the option Philadelphia can still put a franchise tag on him and he wouldn’t be going anywhere.  They also don’t know how healthy Carson Wentz is.  He is dealing with a fractured vertebrae which limited him to 11 games this season.  If Wentz is 100%, he will be the starter and Foles as the backup, otherwise Foles is the starter.  Time will tell what Foles decides to do with his option in his contract.  fffffff
