The New York Mets are going to miss a big piece of their pitching rotation. Noah Syndergaard started on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. In the second inning, he grabbed his right side after throwing a pitch to Bryce Harper. Syndergaard was taken out at that point after giving up 5 runs. An MRI on Monday revealed a partial tear in his right latismus muscle. He will be placed on the 10-day disabled list but will be out indefinitely. According to ESPN, Nationals Manager Dusty Baker said, “We could tell something was wrong. He was throwing the ball firm, but it wasn’t moving like usual. When you have a guy like that, you certainly have to jump on him.”
Syndergaard is one of the Mets’ best young pitchers. He has been in the Majors for 3 years. In those seasons he has a record of 24-18 with an ERA of 2.92. What makes him so difficult to face is he strikes batters out with a total of 416. He rarely throws a ball up in the zone for batters to hit it out of the park.
This season, Syndergaard started in 5 games with a record of 1-2. His ERA is 3.29. He was still able to strike batters out with 32.
This is a big blow for the Mets’ rotation. Syndergaard was their number one pitcher. Jacob deGrom will now be the ace of the staff while he is out. DeGrom is just as tough to face because he can strike batters out with 44 this year. He will need to continue doing that to help the Mets win games.
The Mets must call somebody up to take Syndergaard’s place on the roster. They have not announced that move yet. Hopefully the Mets can still remain in playoff contention while Syndergaard is out.
How do you feel the Mets will do with out Noah Syndergaard?
