Patrick Ewing A Fit For Georgetown University’s Vacancy

By Jordan Long

Georgetown University is going to meet with Patrick Ewing today about the Men’s Basketball head coaching position. The job has been open since Georgetown fired John Thompson III on March 13th after 13 seasons. What cost Thompson his job was failing to make the NCAA Tournament the last two years. Would Patrick Ewing be a good fit?

Georgetown is familiar with Patrick Ewing. He played his college basketball there from 1981 to 1985. During his college career, he averaged 15.3 points, 3.4 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game. Georgetown made three appearances in the National Championship with Ewing only winning one championship in 1984. After college Ewing was drafted by the New York Knicks. He went on to have a Hall of Fame NBA career playing 17 NBA seasons with three teams, the New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, and the Seattle Super Sonics.

Patrick Ewing has never been a head coach at any level but has been an assistant coach for the past 13 years for three different teams. Those are the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and the Charlotte Hornets.

Georgetown would be making the right hire with Ewing. He knows the game of basketball well. Ewing could instruct these college athletes and turn Georgetown into a winner once again.

The downside is that he has never been a head coach at any level. Georgetown would need to be patient with him. It will take more than a year or two for him to recruit and have the athletes understand his coaching system. Once that occurs, Georgetown may be in the NCAA tournament for years to come.

What do you think of Patrick Ewing possibly becoming Georgetown University’s Head Coach?
