The Baltimore Ravens made a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. The Ravens sent defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan and a third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for the Eagles’ third-round pick. This allows the Ravens to move up from number 99 to number 74 in the NFL draft.
This was an excellent transaction for the Eagles. The Eagles needed to replace Bennie Logan who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason. Logan had a total of 5.5 sacks for the Eagles in his four-year career. He was able to disrupt the opponents’ running game. Logan had a total of 163 tackles.
Jernigan is going to replace Logan on the defensive line. He will be able to not only stop the opponents’ running game, but sack the quarterback. In his three years in Baltimore he was able to take down the quarterback 13 times. Jernigan has total of 91 tackles.
According to ESPN, Eagles Executive Vice President of Football operations Howie Roseman said, “We are excited to add Timmy Jernigan to our defensive front. It was hard to move down in the third round, but we believe in building along the lines, and he is a good fit for our scheme. At 24 years old, his best football is still ahead of him.”
The Eagles defensive line is improved with the acquisition of Jernigan. Opposing quarterbacks will need to see where Jernigan is lined up. If there is a running play, they must run to the side away from Jernigan to gain yards. Offensive linemen must be able to block him. He has the speed to beat the line and wrap his hands on the quarterback. If it isn’t a sack, his presence could force an overthrow or interception. The Eagles are more dangerous on defense with Jernigan.
What do you think about the Baltimore Ravens trading Timmy Jernigan to the Philadelphia Eagles?
