Phillip Lindsay, A Target At Running Back For the Denver Broncos In the 2018 NFL Draft

By Jordan Long

The Denver Broncos are preparing for the NFL draft which will start April 26th. Denver may look for a quarterback, defensive line, and secondary. The Broncos have been known to pick the best player available regardless of position. There is one player Denver might select in the later rounds, running back Phillip Lindsay.

Denver lacks depth at the running back position. On the roster are 3 backs, C.J. Anderson, Devontae Booker, and De’angelo Henderson. They could use another one. Anderson and Booker are the starters while Henderson lacks NFL experience, rushing the football 7 times last year for 13 yards.

Lindsay makes a lot of sense as a 6th or 7th round pick, assuming another team won’t draft him. He played his college football up the road in Boulder, Colorado for the University of Colorado Buffaloes.

During his time at CU, he played all 4 years. In 2014 and 2015 he was the backup. He had his chance to shine in 2016 as the starting running back. He rushed for 1,252 yards with an impressive 5.1 yards per carry. His running style kept the pressure off of the CU quarterbacks to allow them to make plays. Lindsay’s runs made for short yardage in 3rd down situations. He was even a threat to go out for passes in the backfield and had 493 yards receiving.

Last season was his best year, running for 1,474 yards and 14 touchdowns. His average yards per rush was slightly down to 4.9 but he was still effective running the football. In the passing game, Lindsay had 23 receptions for 257 yards.

Denver should pick him. He will take the pressure off of Booker and Anderson. If Denver doesn’t select him, another team may because of what he can do in the open field. It is possible the Broncos might sign him as a college free agent. Denver needs another running back and it is possible Lindsay can fill that void.
