The Philadelphia Eagles ended the year at 4-11-1, last in the NFC East Division. There are rumors Carson Wentz would like to be dealt but the Eagles probably won’t trade him. According to MSN.com, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said,”(He) wants to leave the franchise. That’s why (a) trade still is in play. This is all real. None of this is made up.”
Wentz has been with Philadelphia ever since they drafted him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He has been an above average quarterback with a career record of 35-32-1. In those games, Wentz tossed for 16,811 yards, 113 touchdowns, and 50 interceptions.
This past season Wentz struggled to read defenses. He threw the ball in double coverage or when the receiver was covered. Those were easy takeaways for the defense with a career high 15 interceptions. That was part of the reason he went 3-8-1 as the starter this year.
The Eagles have their quarterback of the future in Jalen Hurts. Hurts showed he could move the ball for the Eagles. His record wasn’t great at 1-3 but he showed what he could do in the NFL. Hurts passed for 1,061 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. The future is bright for the Eagles with Hurts under center.
Hurts showed the Eagles franchise that he is the starter of the future and not Wentz. Wentz is seeing that and would like a chance to compete for the starting position once again. The only way that will happen is if the Eagles trade him. They will take calls from other teams, but it is highly unlikely they will let Wentz go.
If they do, the Eagles want a 1st-round pick for Wentz. A deal may look like what the Rams gave the Lions. Detroit traded quarterback Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff. The deal also included a third-round draft pick in this years’ NFL Draft, plus two future first-round picks to the Detroit Lions.
The biggest difficulty with finding a trade partner for the Eagles is Wentz’s cap hit. Wentz’s cap hit for 2021 is around $34.673 million which is a lot for a team to take on. This would hurt any franchise because that could take up the money they have for free agents. It is possible for them to talk to Wentz to make the number lower. It might be a one year rental since Wentz has a potential opt-out after next season. It wouldn’t be worth it for 1 season.
The Eagles are better off keeping Wentz. He can compete with Hurts to determine who will be the starting quarterback in 2021.
