Pitcher Max Scherzer’s Time In New York Up Soon?

By Jordan Long

The New York Mets are having a disappointing season.  They sit at 36-43, 16 games behind the Atlanta Braves for 1st place in the National League East Division.  If the season keeps going like this, the Mets will be sellers at the trade deadline on August 1st.  One player who might be moved is Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is in his 2nd year with the Mets.  Last season, he went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA with 173 strikeouts.  Those stats helped the Mets earn a Wild Card spot.  They were ultimately knocked off by the San Diego Padres in the best of three, 2 games to 1. The Mets were shut out in game 3, 6-0 ending their season.  Scherzer started game 1 in that series, lasting 4.2 innings giving up 7 runs.  Those were all earned.

This season, the Mets’ expectations were very high.  Their payroll is the highest in baseball at $353,546,845.  With that, the Mets wanted to be competitive in the National League East Division and advance far in the postseason.  They haven’t made the World Series since 2015 when they were beaten by Kansas City in 5 games.  The Mets are 36-43 and look like they are going nowhere.  Scherzer is the bright spot for the Mets with a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 3.95. He also has struck out 76 batters. The Mets could deal him to a contending team at the deadline if they are still not competitive.

Scherzer could help a team stay in a race for a playoff spot and advance in the playoffs with the goal of winning the World Series. Scherzer though controls all the cards.  He has a no-trade clause so he has a say on where he lands.  He would like nothing more than to win another World Series.
