Possible Candidates To Take Over As Jacksonville’s Head Coach in 2022

By Jordan Long

The Jacksonville Jaguars are once again going to look for a new Head Coach once their season is over on January 9th.  They fired Urban Mayer after a 2-11 start to the season. There were many incidents with him that owner Shahid Khan couldn’t let go.   The Jaguars will go with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell as the Interim Head Coach.

Bevell has his chance to show he deserves to be the Head Coach for years to come.  Bevell knows he has 4 games to prove it.  If Jacksonville ends up with a winning record or .500 for the rest of the year, Bevell should be the favorite to win the job.   The players know him which could help. If not, there are other candidates to look at.  These include Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Byron Leftwich, and Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Dan Quinn among others.

Kellen Moore and Byron Leftwich don’t have Head Coaching experience.  Moore has the least experience out of the two.  Moore is 32 years old.  He has been the offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys since 2019.  Moore may not know how to run a team but can run an offense.  Moore has gained the respect of the Cowboys’ offensive players and he would do the same with the Jaguars.

Leftwich is a familiar name with Jacksonville.  He was their quarterback from 2003 to 2006.  In 2018 Leftwich served as offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.  In 2019 he was hired as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator and has been there ever since.  Leftwich is a pretty good offensive mind. His job is made easier since he has future Hall of Famer Tom Brady as his quarterback. Leftwich could make sense and help quarterback Trevor Lawrence grow at the NFL level.

Both of these coordinators know how to run the offense which is what Urban Mayer was known for.   The Jaguars might decide to go defense.  They need somebody who has been a Head Coach as well.  Dan Quinn fits that bill.  Quinn was the Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020.  In that time, the Falcons earned a playoff spot twice and advanced to Super Bowl 51.  His overall record is 43-42.

Quinn could focus on building a defense in Jacksonville.  This might be the key for them to be back in the playoffs.  Jacksonville hasn’t earned a playoff spot since 2017.  Quinn’s defense might cause sacks and turnovers which would give the Jaguars offense a short field to work with if he is hired.

Khan will take his time finding a new Head Coach for his franchise.  He can’t afford to go with a  big college name as he did with Meyer because it backfired.    Khan must look at all candidates and go with the one he feels is right.  He can’t afford another misfire as Head Coach. Khan would love nothing better than to have a coach transform his team into a consistent playoff team and one who could be a Super Bowl threat every year especially with Trevor Lawrence at quarterback.
