Quarterback Controversy In Houston

The Houston Texans have a quarterback controversy after week one.   They lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20. Brian Hoyer started the game but was benched by Head Coach Bill O’Brian in the fourth quarter. Ryan Mallet ended up finishing the game.   Who should start for this team?

Coach Bill O’Brian is hitting the panic button a little too early. It’s only week one. Hoyer was 18 of 34 for 236 yards with one touchdown and one interception, not great numbers but not horrible ones either. The biggest problem though is that the offensive line didn’t protect Hoyer. He was sacked four times in the game.

Mallett appeared in the 4th quarter and was 8 of 13 for 98 yards with one touchdown. He was more careful with the ball and didn’t throw an interception. He was also sacked one time.   According to ESPN, Head Coach Bill O’Brian won’t decide who will start saying, “You’ll have to wait until the first offensive play of the Carolina game to see who the quarterback will be.”

The quarterback play wasn’t what decided the game, it was the defensive line of the Kansas City Chiefs. They sacked the quarterbacks five times and hit them four times. The offensive line did a horrible job at protecting the quarterback. It won’t matter who is quarterbacking if the offensive line can’t give them time to throw the ball.

It’s only the first week of the NFL season. The Texans shouldn’t have a quarterback controversy.   Hoyer was the guy O’Brian picked to start the season and that’s who should be the quarterback next week. Wait a few weeks to see how he performs. If he struggles, then have Ryan Mallet in the game.   Hoyer should be given the chance to prove he can lead this team, not just one week.

Who do you feel should start for the Houston Texans?
