Quarterback Derek Carr Lands In the “Big Easy”, Agrees To A 4-Year Contract

By Jordan Long

One quarterback on the free agent market is now off, Derek Carr.  He is now going to the New Orleans Saints.   The deal is for 4 years.  The terms haven’t been announced.

Carr played his entire career with the Raiders’ franchise.  His overall record with the Raiders was 63-79.  That record doesn’t tell the whole story.  Carr was able to move the Raiders down the field to score touchdowns.  He passed for 35,222 yards and 217 touchdowns.  He was careful with the ball, throwing 99 interceptions.

This past season, Carr went 6-9 as the Raiders’ starter tossing for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.  Those numbers say Carr should have stayed with the team.

There were rumblings the Raiders were going to let him go.   Carr was released on February 14th meaning he was a free agent.  He might have been the best quarterback on the market.

The Saints knew they needed to upgrade the quarterback position. They have Jameis Winston on the roster, but they may cut him after this move.  His record with the Saints is pretty good at  6-4.  Winston has passed for 2,103 yards and 18 touchdowns in a Saints’ uniform.   He doesn’t throw the ball into double coverage with 8 picks.  The Saints, though, wanted a quarterback who had been a consistent starter in this league. They decided  Carr was the best quarterback choice for this franchise moving forward.

Carr is going to improve their offensive numbers.  Carr is a smart quarterback who is going to look at the defensive set allowing him to either change the play for the Saints or go with the play that is called.  He will then look at his progressions to find the open receiver.  This should keep drives going for the Saints and march them down the field to score points.

The Saints know they have gotten better with this one move.  They are looking to earn a playoff spot for the first time since 2020.  Carr wants to be part of that solution.
