The New York Jets fell to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday 24-9. They look to bounce back as they hit the road to take on the Cleveland Browns. The Jets announced Joe Flacco will start yet again this week.
Flacco earned the start last week after quarterback Zach Wilson hurt himself in the preseason. He suffered a bone bruise and a meniscus tear in his knee. Flacco has been the veteran backup quarterback for the Jets since 2020. It made sense to have him be under center last week since he brought in more experience than Mike White. White is in his 4th year in the NFL but started just 3 games. A far cry from Flacco’s 177 starts for the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, and New York Jets.
In the loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Flacco completed 37 of 59 passes for 307 yards and 1 touchdown. He was picked off once while being sacked 3 times. 59 pass attempts is a lot for the Jets. Of course, they were behind in this game so the only way to try to come back is to throw the football. There wasn’t a threat of a running game and the Ravens just waited for Flacco to pass the football. The Jets ran the football a total of 17 times, not a balanced attack.
Going into this week’s game against the Browns, there are questions if Flacco would be the quarterback this week. Those have been answered. Flacco is the quarterback going forward. The Jets will not turn to Mike White at this time unless Flacco is hurt or has a poor showing.
Sure the game against the Ravens was awful but it was the whole team and not just Flacco. Flacco played well and there is no reason to start White. If for some reason, if Flacco struggles this week and his numbers are worse, then turn to White.
The Jets need a better performance against the Browns. Flacco should be able to move the team down the field but the defense must step up. Maybe, this week if Flacco plays well and they earn the victory, questions will die about who should be the quarterback until Zach Wilson returns from his injury. Another bad loss and questions will be swirling once again.
