As we all know, the New York Jets have a new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. He was acquired on April 26 from the Green Bay Packers. This boosts the Jets’ playoff chances. They have added another weapon and a familiar target for Rodgers, Randall Cobb. Cobb agreed to a 1-year deal with the Jets. The financial terms of the deal weren’t announced.
Cobb spent 2011 to 2018 with Green Bay before moving to Dallas for the 2019 season. The goal for any wide receiver is to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards. He did that once, in 2014 when he totaled a career high 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns. The only other year that came close to those numbers was 2012 when Cobb had 954 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns.
In the 2019 offseason, Cobb was a free agent. Of course, Green Bay could have kept him but decided not to re-sign him. Cobb agreed to a 1-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on March 19th, 2019. The Cowboys had a franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. Dallas thought teaming Prescott with Cobb would help the team become a Super Bowl contender.
Cobb put up a great season in his one and only year in Dallas. He played in 15 games catching 55 passes for 828 yards and 3 touchdowns. His average yards per catch ended at 15.1. Even so, the Cowboys decided to move on from Cobb.
Cobb then went to Houston and spent 2020 there. It was a disappointing season. Cobb hauled in 38 passes for 441 yards and 3 touchdowns. Once the year was up, Cobb went back to Green Bay as a free agent, spending the last two years in Green Bay.
Aaron Rodgers knows what Cobb is capable of. In a Green Bay uniform, Rodgers found him 532 times. Cobb used his speed to separate himself from the defensive backs to get open. When that happened, Cobb caught the football for first downs or longer. Cobb totaled 6,316 receiving yards and 47 touchdowns in his time in Green Bay. His average yards per catch stands at 11.9.
The New York Jets offense is improved with this one move. Cobb joins a wide receiver core that includes Allen Lazard who also was a teammate of Cobb’s in Green Bay in 2018, 2021, and 2022. Rodgers will also look for Corey Davis and Garrett Wilson.
The Jets on paper are primed to end their 12-year playoff drought. The last time they earned a playoff spot was in 2010. They were beaten in the AFC title game by Pittsburgh 24-19. The Jets haven’t even been to the Super Bowl since Super Bowl 3 when they defeated the then Baltimore Colts. The Jets know this season may be their best chance to do something special which might be a Super Bowl victory.
